Before the event · Train the Trainer

The learning is only as good as the person facilitating it.

A practical programme in facilitation skills for the people who train, brief and debrief in your organisation, so what they teach is understood, remembered and used, rather than simply presented.

Why this programme exists

Subject experts are rarely taught how people learn.

Most internal trainers are excellent at their jobs and were asked to teach because of it. They know the content inside out. What they are seldom given is the craft of facilitation: how to ask questions that make people think, how to listen without steering, how to manage the energy of a room, and how to create the psychological safety that lets people admit what they don't know.

Without that craft, sessions drift towards reading slides and telling. People attend, nod and go back to work unchanged. This programme gives your trainers, instructors and team leaders the skills to turn a session into learning that reaches the work.

The idea at the centre of it

Learning doesn't happen in the doing. It happens in the reflection on the doing.

That is why the programme is built around practice and debrief, and why participants spend much of their time facilitating rather than listening to us.

What you will cover

Four parts, each building on the last.

Face to face, the programme runs over two days. Online, it runs as four three-hour sessions, with reflection and preparation in between. Each part opens by reflecting on the last, so the learning is consolidated as you go.

Part 1

The role of the facilitator

  • Facilitating rather than presenting
  • Adapting your style to the group
  • Using your voice and managing energy
  • Building psychological safety in the room

Part 2

Questioning and listening

  • When, how and why to ask questions
  • Open, probing and reflective questions
  • Handling answers and questions well
  • Active listening and its barriers

Part 3

How people learn

  • From memorising to understanding to doing
  • The experiential learning cycle
  • Spaced learning and retention
  • Using stories to make it relevant

Part 4

Delivering and feedback

  • Each participant delivers a 15-minute session
  • A structured debrief after every session
  • Feedback from peers and facilitator
  • Your own plan for what comes next

How we facilitate

Four things Gareth never forgets in front of a group.

The programme is taught the way we ask participants to teach. These are the habits we model throughout, and the ones we hope your trainers take back with them.

  • Own my mistakes in front of the group.
  • Remember that I was once a student.
  • Ask for feedback often.
  • There is always something new to learn.
