Our Logo

Systems typically operate in a broken state -represented by the fractured cog in our logo. Traditionally we view people - and human error - as the problem within the system. However, a more progressive view is that people are actually the solution to building highly effective and resilient systems.

This is why the human forms the base of the cog in our logo, and instead of being a spanner in the works, humans finish the design and complete every system.

Meet the Founder

Owner and director of Human in the System, Gareth Lock is both curious and a curiosity. He has a diverse background covering military aircrew, flight trials officer, research advisor, systems engineer, human factors trainer, published author, entrepreneur, and a pracademic.

He has worked in multiple high-risk domains outside the one he’s most well-known for: diving. His passion is provocatively identifying and joining (hidden) dots, translating ideas into practice, with the goal of transforming teams and unlocking their potential through highly experiential, reflective, and sometimes uncomfortable learning programmes.

A provocateur and mentor, Gareth also owns The Human Diver, a niche organisation serving the diving community with safety and performance training.

Career Highlights

25 years in the RAF operating as aircrew, flight instructor, research and development advisor, systems engineer and requirements manager.

Presented on and published a paper on Human Factors in Oil and Gas at the inaugural IADC HF Conference in 2015.

Established the only company focused on delivering HF and CRM training and consultancy in the diving sector.

Author of Under Pressure. Self-published, more than 4000 copies sold.

Producer of If Only..., more than 40k viewings across multiple industries.

Led two fatal military diving inquiries for the UK MOD and NZDF, reporting at 2* level.

Organised and ran the first global HF in Diving conference in 2021.

Completed a MSc in Human Factors and System Safety at Lund University on the factors that support learning by telling context-rich stories following an adverse event.

Built a team of qualified instructors to deliver our material globally.
