Process Communication Model

The Process Communication Model is an award-winning personality and communications model which was used for nearly 20 years as part of the NASA astronaut selection process. It has been validated in the academic literature and is the only personality model which provides a specific communication toolset that allows people to enhance their communication and manage distress. The training provides simple, real practical skills about how to communicate and not just pigeon-hole people as 'XYZ' personality. Knowing you are 'XYZ' doesn't help others communicate with you or you with others! More than 1.2 million people's lives have been changed as a consequence of being able to communicate clearly!

GemaSim is a serious gaming platform which forces the students into a high-stress and competitive environment where they must successfully apply the skills they learned in the academics portion of the course. The team competition adds additional stress to the event. Crews are assigned specific missions with fifteen minutes allocated to plan and brief the mission as a crew. At the conclusion of the mission brief, the crews begin their 45-minute mission. The crews are challenged to complete time critical tasks, conduct experiments, manage energy and fuel, handle emergencies, and make mission-critical decisions. The teams earn or lose points depending upon the outcomes.

The first time students go through the course they make many errors and don’t typically employ the skills learned in academics effectively. The second mission is critical to the success of the learning, as it reinforces the lessons learned and experiences from the first mission. The second mission consistently reveals significant improvements in team performance. 

The most effective courses are conducted over two days with additional theory, two more missions to show consolidation of non-technical skills and the ability to operate as both crew and observer, the latter is often enlightening for many students.

"This research project, which evaluated over 500 U.S. Air Force combat aviators, resulted in statistically significant lasting improvement (Kirkpatrick’s Level III) in aviator performance at the end of the training through several of the innovative learning technologies. GemaSim was one of these technologies that proved statistical success in student critiques (Kirkpatrick’s Level I), evidence of learning (Kirkpatrick’s Level II), and positive change of behavior (Kirkpatrick’s Level III) four to six weeks after the GemaSim training, during their final check ride.
